42nd Street (1933) with Sam Weisberg
Equally delightful, flawed, and seminal, 42nd Street is the Rosetta Stone of Hollywood musicals—a meta-narrative in which a Broadway producer puts on what may be his last show and a sassy chorus girl has to replace the star. We’re kicking off Inspiration is for Amateurs with this hugely influential film full of razor-sharp banter, complicated love polygons, and the signature physics-defying musical numbers of Busby Berkeley.
Sam Weisberg (he/him) is a director, performer, wine expert, and occasional graphic designer and the de facto banner-keeper of Commutator Collective.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) with Maggie Cramer
A devastating examination of what it means to be observed and depicted, Portrait of a Lady on Fire became an instant classic upon its release. In the late 18th century, a female painter travels to an isolated island in France to paint a portrait of a young woman, only to fall in love with her subject and discover new meaning in the act of art-making. Inspiration is for Amateurs continues with this intense, intimate story of yearning and release.
Maggie Cramer (she/her) is an actor based in the Twin Cities who has appeared on many local stages and in numerous film and commercial projects, including Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders.
