Get to know sculpture and visual artist Emily Mulvaney, co-curator of our upcoming screening of The Ring at the Main Cinema.

Why did you select The Ring for this series?
This film’s off-putting yet alluring affect imprinted on me at a very young age. The visceral, dreary, and cold visual landscape created by Verbinski still sits in my gut over 20 years later. It’s incredibly immersive.
Can you share the story of when you first saw The Ring?
My parents had rented the movie from our local video store for themselves, but I got ahold of it one night. My 7-year-old self pulled our gigantic Lazy Boy recliner directly in front of the TV and sat there, mouth agape, unwilling or unable to look away.
Where was your favorite place to watch movies growing up?
My childhood basement, 100%. Nostalgia! I loved trips to the video store and curating the idyllic viewing experience at home. Many blanket forts were built around the basement TV.
For someone who has never seen The Ring, what should they expect or know going in?
Don’t let the PG-13 rating fool you, this film is a ripper. The dread seeps in slowly and before you know it… you’re at the bottom of a well, desperate to get out. Also — Naomi Watts.
We at Sloppy Discs suspect that you love physical things as much as we do. What's a medium or material that you've been loving recently?
I’m deeply in love with making biodegradable materials in my studio. I like witnessing the degradation and various life-phases of my work. They often grow mold and become rather repulsive, but that can be the most exciting part!
