A group of scientists investigates a mysterious zone filled with bizarre, beautiful, continuously mutating plants and animals. Adapted from Jeff VanderMeer’s bestselling novel and taking cues from Tarkovsky and psychedelia, Alex Garland’s sophomore directorial effort explores the complementary horrors of transformation and replication in a mind-altering allegory about the nature of change. Starring Natalie Portman, with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, and Oscar Isaac.

Two young lovers sing their way through the everyday trials and tribulations of midcentury France. Jacques Demy’s prismatic masterpiece of the French New Wave features the melancholic music of Michel Legrand, a star-making performance by Catherine Deneuve, and stunning cinematography, costumes, and production design that beg to be seen on a big screen. For fans of In The Mood for Love, Moulin Rouge, and the films of Damien Chazelle.
GREMLINS

Monday, December 21, 7pm
Chaos reigns after a father brings home an adorable (but diabolical) new pet as a Christmas present for his teenage son. Director Joe Dante’s wicked sense of humor and special effects prowess are on full display in this loony demolition derby through American consumerism. A welcome dose of acid to complement the sweetness of the holiday season and a staple of Gen X cinema.
Each screening will be followed by a conversation with a Twin Cities creative, digging into why they love the film and how it has informed their practice.
